Crisscrossing America on our summer store tour, our next stop is Phoenix where we dropped in on our friends at Little Artika (5355 East High Street, Phoenix, AZ 85054).
When we travel the country to visit our retail partners, it’s very cool to see the unique qualities of each store –from the interior design to the window displays to the logos. Nowhere is this more true than at Little Artika where owner Kari uses an Antarctica-in-the-desert theme to build an entire shopping experience. Situated at the CityNorth complex in the Northeast part of the city, you are greeted overhead by Perdu Penguin, one of several Little Artika characters you will find around the store. Given our love for inventive graphic design that manages to be fun for kids without being saccharine, we loved seeing the all of the characters in large format.

Did we mention how much we liked the dolls hanging suspended in the window?

The entire back half of the store is shaped like the inside of a giant igloo, with a rounded top and small, curved shelves built right into the wall (we did a really poor job of photographing it. Just close your eyes and imagine).

They have a fantastic collection of clothing, gear and very cool, high-concept toy cars right behind the register.

And of course, they carry the Sam and Ray Cribs on the floor at their store which are prominently displayed in their furniture section, including the Sam Crib with the Blue Whale MuuPanel (which looks quite nice below their blue polar bear).

Next time you’re in Phoenix, make sure you check out their store. If you plan to visit in the fall, they’re opening a super-secret new location in Central Phoenix where you’ll also be able to see our furniture.

As a company that specifically chose to make Muu furniture here in the USA, we’re always interested in reading about other companies who have chosen to do the same, whether they make furniture or, in the case of Farouk Systems, hair irons. The Wall Street Journal has an interesting piece today about the company’s decision to relocate their production from China to Houston, a choice which will help them fight counterfeit products as well as improve their control over manufacturing quality and distribution.
The ability to maintain a high degree of quality was a huge consideration when we chose to produce our furniture locally as was the realization that a tremendous amount of energy is consumed transporting things from halfway around the globe. While there are quality manufacturers all over the world, it was important for us to work with woodworkers who shared our values and commitment to quality and we like to support other companies who do the same. Now if we only needed a hair iron!
We were thrilled to learn that Muu’s Sam Collection was named an International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) Finalist for 2009 by the Industrial Designers Society of America (we know, it just rolls right off of our tongue too!) Think of it as the Academy Awards of design without the Van Cleef & Arpels. The award jury was comprised of 20 world-renowned designers and design thinkers who selected the Sam Collection from over 1,600 entries from around the globe. Award criteria included excellence in design innovation, ecological responsibility, benefit to the user and society, aesthetics and appeal, and rigor and reliability. In naming the Sam Collection as a design finalist, IDEA
noted that our furniture is “designed with personalization and longevity at its core.”
If you visit the awards site, there a several amazing products and innovative designs, including the “Best in Show” Nike Trash Talk basketball shoe made from leftover manufacturing materials and a promotional invitation made from laser engraved leaves.
We’re thrilled to have been named an award finalist and proud to be recognized alongside products from Apple, Nike and Herman Miller, among others.
If you’re at the newsstand, pick up a copy of the New Mom’s Handbook by Pregnancy Magazine and the Hot Moms Club. The publication is chock full of great information and features the Sam Toddler Conversion Kit and Sam Dresser as Must Have Nursery picks. Aww, we’re blushing!
